How to get to Santorini

There are two main ways to get to Santorini. One is to grab a ferry and the other is to fly there. Obviously the most comfortable and quickest way is to fly there while riding a ferry is the more scenic and cheap way to reach this amazing island.

Flying to Santorini

You can fly to Santorini from Athens Airport Eleftherios Venizelos but you might be surprised to find out you can also fly there directly from the main cities of Europe, such as Amsterdam, Paris, London and a couple of others.

One thing you should keep in mind if you are doing a tour of several Greek islands is that there are usually no direct flights from one island to another.

Another pro of traveling by plane to Santorini is that you can book the flights way in advance without having to worry about availability. It’s a bit more difficult to book ferry tickets. Despite that, in most cases getting to Santorini by ferry is preferable.

Riding a ferry to Santorini

There are several ferry lines and agency that offer rides to Santorini. This is the preferred method of travel to Santorini for the majority of travelers. It takes about 9 hours to get to Santorini from Athens with the normal ferry and around 5-6 to get there with the fast ferry. Even though it takes a long time it’s much cheaper and there’s also a special type of beauty traveling by sea, and seeing other islands along the way.

If you’re already in Athens booking a ferry ticket is really easy and most travel agencies offer them. However, if you’re not in Athens it might be slightly more inconvenient to find them online ahead of time.
